Pinstripes and Sneakers - At the intersection of business and the young adult

May 23rd, 2007 by Jack Vinson

I just discovered Pinstripes and Sneakers - At the intersection of business and the young adult, which might be a useful resource for anyone in the class who is interested in the issue of positively bringing the next generation into the workplace.

Parkinson’s Law

May 23rd, 2007 by Jack Vinson

Tammy discovered a description of Tim Ferriss’ The 4-Hour Workweek and a mention of Parkinson’s Law at Lifehacker yesterday.  Book Excerpt: Parkinson’s Law and The 4-Hour Workweek - Lifehacker.

Strangely, I had also found Tim Ferriss a few weeks ago, Productivity on the Brain.

For completeness, Parkinson’s Law is defined on Wikipedia with links to discussions about C. Northcote Parkinson and the original discussion of this law.

18 Lessons for would-be bloggers

April 14th, 2007 by Jack Vinson

Joshua Porter has a pair of posts on things would-be bloggers might want to consider or know.  Useful for our class, as we get into blogging ourselves.  I include the link to the original articles and the numbered topics.  Dive into the full articles to see his complete thoughts.  Some of these may seem rather obscure without the details or without spending a little more time in the blogosphere.

  7. Correct English be-damned
  8. Show your greatest hits

9 More Lessons for Would-be Bloggers

  2. When you screw up, say so immediately
  3. Know when to take it offline
  4. Link back to your good stuff
  5. Reread to yourself
  6. Treat every post as a possible later reference
  7. Keep updating your best posts
  8. Name things (e.g. The Del.icio.us Lesson, The Chanel No. 5 Lesson)
  9. Link to the quiet, unknown ones

Additional discussion on blogging codes of conduct

April 10th, 2007 by Jack Vinson

Judy Breck of SmartMobs has a summary of and some pointers to the recent discussions of Blogger Code of Conduct, Framing the “Blogger Code of Conduct” discussion. There is also plenty of conversation that you can see at Technorati, which is one of the blog-specific search tools we discussed in class.

I’m breaking my own rule about providing links to content, since I don’t have much more to say than, “follow this if you are curious.”

For those really curious about blog layouts

April 10th, 2007 by Jack Vinson

The default options for blogs at this installation provide just two templates. There are hundreds (thousands?) of templates available out on the web.

For a nice set of examples, have a look at the WordPress Theme Browser, which shows themes that were submitted for a design a context. If you come across a theme here or elsewhere that you’d like to use, send me a link to the page, and we can have it added to the install here.

Group OPML available shortly

April 8th, 2007 by Jack Vinson

Tammy or I will provide a new OPML file that links to everyone’s blog, once they are all set up. I will also put them all into the blogroll for this blog (check out the side bar for the blogroll).

This is an example of a WordPress page, you could edit this to put information about yourself or your site so readers know where you are coming from. You can create as many pages like this one or sub-pages as you like and manage all of your content inside of WordPress.
